If you like collectibles, you've probably heard of Hot Toys. The Hong Kong-based company has flourished into one of the world's most popular manufacturers of high-end action figures, with products costing hundreds or even thousands of dollars sometimes. But... why?
The short answer is that they're extremely high quality, collectible, painstakingly handmade, have limited production runs, and are based on popular franchises such as Star Wars or Marvel.
Each Hot Toys action figure is created in direct collaboration with the character's creator/media house. Hot Toys always nails every detail in their figures, from expressions to paint and colour to accessories. A Hot Toy never fails to deliver perfection.
In comparison to regular mass-produced figures, which typically have 20-25 points of articulation and 3-4 accessories, a Hot Toy has 50-100 points of articulation and a wide choice of accessories. Even a regular Hot Toys figure has more articulation and accessories than almost any other figure, so imagine what the deluxe versions will have. Speaking of deluxe editions, they are becoming more common and are absolutely fantastic.
The average Hot Toy is far superior to almost any toy on the market, utilising the highest quality materials and manufacturing processes to achieve its hyper-realistic look and feel. Everything, from the packaging to the final product, is meticulously detailed and carefully crafted. In fact, Hot Toys' production processes are constantly improving, which only adds to their quality (one only needs to look at some of the very first Hot Toys produced to see how far they've come).
Hot Toys are painstakingly sculpted and painted by hand, unlike traditional toys or action figures that are mass-produced using assembly line technology. Because of this, it can take hundreds of hours to complete a single figure. As with other handmade items, the price rises because highly skilled artists are required to complete this work. Hot Toys, in fact, has a dedicated team of sculptors and painters at their South Korean location.
Most Hot Toys figures are limited to 2,000 - 3,000 editions in the world. This scarcity leads to a simple supply and demand, which distinguishes them. The limited nature and quality of these action figures have only increased their demand, leading to premium prices, which is one of the reasons for Hot Toys' growing popularity.
