Taro Sakamoto—the legend whispered in assassin circles, the phantom who once ruled the underworld with silent precision. Once the greatest hitman to ever exist, a ghost among shadows, he walked away from it all for a quiet life with his wife, Aoi, and their daughter, Hana, running a humble convenience store. But the past never truly lets go. When a bounty is placed on his head, the retired assassin is dragged back into the chaos, forced to navigate a deadly world he thought he left behind. With new allies by his side—Shin, the clairvoyant hitman; Lu, the fierce brawler; and Heisuke, the sharpshooter—Sakamoto must balance the life he cherishes with the relentless ghosts of his past. The legend may have settled down, but make no mistake—the beast never left.
Taro Sakamoto carries the presence of a man who has lived multiple lives. In the present, he stands tall, his once-chiseled frame softened by time and contentment. His gray hair, slicked back into a loose ponytail—reminiscent of a man bun—carries the weight of a past he rarely speaks of. A small broom mustache rests on his face, a quiet contrast to the sharp instincts that still lurk beneath his easygoing demeanor. Draped in a simple T-shirt and long pants, with an apron tied around his waist, he looks every bit the friendly neighborhood store owner. And always, without fail, he opts for slippers—whether strolling through the aisles of his shop or stepping into the chaos of battle. His round glasses, perpetually catching the light, obscure his eyes, masking the sharp gaze of a man who once stood atop the world’s deadliest killers.
But the past never truly fades. In his prime, Sakamoto was a different beast—a lean, razor-sharp force of nature, unburdened by time and untouched by excess. No mustache, no extra weight—just sheer, lethal efficiency. When the situation demands it, he can burn through his stored energy, momentarily shedding his current form to reclaim that past self. In this state, every feature sharpens, his eyes pierce through the lenses of his glasses, and the air around him shifts. Even Shin, who has seen his fair share of killers, can’t help but admit—the man is downright handsome.
And then, there was that moment—the JCC infiltration. When Nagumo, in his ever-mischievous brilliance, disguised Sakamoto as none other than his wife, Aoi. A transformation so absurd yet executed with such precision that even the most hardened assassins wouldn’t dare question it. After all, in the world of Sakamoto, anything is possible.
Taro Sakamoto is a man of few words, but his actions speak volumes. Once the deadliest assassin in the world, he walked away from it all for the love of his family, trading bloodstained missions for a quiet life behind a convenience store counter. His devotion to his wife, Aoi, is absolute—so much so that he adheres to an ironclad "No Killing Policy." This vow, born from love, has become his moral compass, shaping him into an unlikely guardian of justice. Even in a world where death is currency, Sakamoto refuses to let the cycle continue, shielding not just his loved ones but even his enemies from needless slaughter.
Stoic by nature, Sakamoto rarely wears his emotions on his sleeve. He exudes an almost unshakable calm, but there’s one force in the world that sends shivers down his spine—his wife’s wrath. Beneath his silent exterior, a deep well of emotions churns. Over time, cracks begin to form in his quiet facade, revealing a man learning to express himself beyond the confines of his own mind. Yet, even as he opens up, he carries an old habit—burying his anger, masking his pain, and shouldering the weight of others’ burdens alone. When Saw brutally injures Shin and Lu in his absence, Sakamoto doesn’t lash out—he simply swallows the rage, locking it away beneath his usual calm. But those who know him best can see it simmering beneath the surface.
Make no mistake—Sakamoto’s patience has limits. When his family is threatened, the beast stirs. The moment someone endangers Aoi or Hana, the easygoing storekeeper vanishes, replaced by something far more dangerous. A fury so raw, so consuming, that for a fleeting second, his old instincts claw their way to the surface. When his daughter’s life was put in jeopardy, the thought of mercy vanished—his mind was singular, primal. Kill.
But this was not always the man he was. In the past, Sakamoto was pure efficiency, a perfect machine built for one purpose—death. He executed his missions with cold detachment, unbothered by the weight of human life. That is, until Aoi. She shattered the walls he didn’t even realize he had built, teaching him the value of a life untouched by violence. Now, when innocents are caught in the crossfire, when the cycle of destruction threatens to swallow the world he’s built, Sakamoto doesn't just fight—he fights to protect. Still, old instincts die hard; he may refuse to kill, but that doesn’t stop him from imagining it—especially when Shin gets on his nerves, much to the clairvoyant’s horror.
At his core, Sakamoto is an affable, good-natured man. His presence in the community extends far beyond the shadow of his past. Neighbours depend on him for everything—from trimming branches to feeding toddlers, even the absurd, like reshaping a ball into two so two kids don’t have to fight over it. And he does it all without hesitation, effortlessly ingraining himself into the fabric of daily life.
He was once a legend, feared and respected. Now, he is something else entirely. A father. A husband. A protector. A man who has turned his back on death but will never hesitate to stand between it and the people he loves.
Aoi Sakamoto
Aoi isn’t just Sakamoto’s wife—she’s his anchor, the force that pulled him away from a life steeped in blood and into one filled with warmth. He loves her deeply, not just as a partner, but as the reason he changed. His respect for her is unwavering, and while he may be an unstoppable force in the assassin world, at home, he’s just a man who knows better than to get on his wife’s bad side. Every action he takes, every line he refuses to cross, is in service of the life they built together. And if avoiding her wrath means following her rules to the letter? Then so be it.
Hana Sakamoto
Hana may not see the terrifying legend her father once was, but Sakamoto’s love for her is boundless. Even if their interactions in the manga are sparse, his devotion is unquestionable. When she wants something, he’ll get it—no matter the cost. Even if that means enduring a full-on beating from a horde of frenzied shoppers just to secure the special backpack she wanted. For Hana, Sakamoto will endure anything.
Shin isn’t just an employee at Sakamoto’s store—he’s family. A former partner from his assassin days, Shin was one of the few people Sakamoto trusted even before he left the underworld behind. When he saved Shin’s life, it wasn’t just an act of mercy—it was an unspoken promise. The two share an unbreakable bond, one built on trust, mutual respect, and a fair amount of bickering. Shin may admire Sakamoto as a mentor, but there’s something even deeper—an older-brother dynamic, where Sakamoto watches over him, even when Shin doesn’t realize it.
Lu’s introduction into Sakamoto’s life was anything but conventional—he saved her for the sole purpose of making him pork buns. But in time, she became more than just a skilled cook—she became part of the family. She may constantly clash with Shin, but Sakamoto watches over her with the same quiet protectiveness he does for everyone he cares about. When the Triad comes knocking, looking to drag her back into their world, Sakamoto doesn’t hesitate—she stays. No matter what.
Nagumo isn’t just an old friend—he’s a reminder of Sakamoto’s past, a connection to the days when killing was second nature. Their friendship dates back to their JAA days, where they were both top-tier assassins and equally legendary troublemakers. Even after Sakamoto’s retirement, the bond remains. When Sakamoto isn’t around, Nagumo steps in—whether that means defending the store or standing watch over his friend’s family. The trust between them is unspoken but absolute.
Their first encounter? A battlefield. Heisuke came for Sakamoto’s head, using his sharpshooting skills to corner both him and Shin. But in the end, Sakamoto’s sheer unpredictability—and a well-placed rock—turned the tide. Instead of becoming a bitter enemy, Heisuke somehow ended up as a companion, forming an odd camaraderie after teaming up with Sakamoto and Shin in an airsoft tournament. The reward? Fifty yen. But perhaps the real prize was an unlikely friendship.
Before Nagumo joined their ranks, it was just Sakamoto and Rion—partners-in-crime, comrades-in-arms, and, for a time, two of the most promising assassins in training. Their shared history at the JCC and later at the JAA forged a deep connection, one built on mutual skill, shared mischief, and an understanding only those who walk the same deadly path can have. They were unstoppable—until they weren’t. Rion’s death marked a turning point in Sakamoto’s life, a wound that never quite healed. And when, years later, a billion-yen bounty is placed on his head under the name Akao, the past he thought he buried rises once more.
Even after years of peace, Sakamoto remains an absolute monster on the battlefield. His body may have softened, but his mind remains razor-sharp. He may no longer be the unstoppable killing machine of his prime, but in combat, he is still something far beyond human.
Sakamoto’s raw physical power is absurd, even in his overweight form.
Perhaps most absurdly, at his peak, he was strong enough to throw his wife over the pillars of a suspension bridge—not out of violence, but simply because he could.
Even in his “weakened” state, he singlehandedly overpowered Kanaguri, a powerful former Order assassin.
Sakamoto doesn’t need a gun—his aim alone is a weapon.
His gun skills are even more terrifying:
Sakamoto’s body can endure inhuman amounts of punishment.
Even his fat grants him a strange resilience, helping him survive attacks that slice through steel beams.
Sakamoto moves faster than the eye can track.
During a game of Old Maid, he stole a card from someone’s hand, put it back, and they never even noticed.
To Sakamoto, everything is a potential weapon.
If it's within reach, it can kill.
At times, Sakamoto can revert to a form akin to his prime physique. When this happens, he becomes unstoppable.
Even so, he adapted—turning his new body into something just as deadly.
Time may have softened his body, but it has not dulled his edge. Even now, even at a fraction of his former power, Taro Sakamoto remains an apex predator—a walking, breathing reminder that some legends never fade. They only grow.
He was the strongest hitman the world had ever seen. He retired. He became a husband, a father, a man who just wanted to run a quiet shop. But when danger comes knocking, the monster beneath the surface awakens once more.
And should the world ever push him too far—should he ever fully unleash his prime self again—then heaven help those who stand in his way.
Because death itself would move aside for Taro Sakamoto.
