House of the Dragon, the prequel to Game of Thrones, is set to introduce a brutal duo in season 2 - Blood and Cheese. These assassins aren't major players in the original A Song of Ice and Fire novels, but their actions will have a significant impact.
Hired by Prince Daemon Targaryen to avenge the death of his son, Lucerys Velaryon, at the hands of Aemond Targaryen, Blood (played by Sam C. Wilson) and Cheese (played by Mark Stobbart) target King Aegon II Targaryen's children.
Brace yourselves for a shocking twist as this ruthless act fuels the flames of the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons.
Cheese, a wiry and nimble figure, scurries through the shadows like a rat he so expertly hunts. In stark contrast, Blood stands imposingly tall, his broad frame a testament to his past as a warrior.
Blood:
This guy was all about muscle and mystery. No one remembers his real name, but everyone knew him from the rough streets of Flea Bottom in King's Landing. Used to be a City Watchman, keeping the peace and all, but then one drunken night ended badly – with a dead prostitute and Blood out of a job. Since then, he'd been hanging around the city's underbelly.
Cheese:
Another mystery man, though this one a bit more on the creepy side. Cheese the rat catcher – that was his whole thing. But rumors swirled that Cheese knew the Red Keep better than most, especially its secret passages and hidden doors. How a rat catcher learned these royal secrets, no one knew.
The Targaryen war was already pretty messed up, but then things took a nasty turn. Prince Lucerys gets whacked by his uncle Aemond, and his mom, Princess Rhaenyra, is beyond furious. Her uncle Daemon, simmering with rage hundreds of miles away, sends word that Lucerys' death won't go unpunished. But his revenge plot wasn't exactly what anyone expected.
Enter Mysaria, a woman who knew all the dark corners of King's Landing. She found the perfect muscle for the job: Blood, a giant ex-City Watchman with a fondness for booze and violence (not a great combo). To help him navigate the Red Keep's hidden passages, she added Cheese, a creepy rat catcher who knew the castle better than most.
These unlikely assassins snuck into the castle like ghosts. The first sign of trouble? A muffled scream from a maid – not a good look. They then reached the chambers of the Queen's mom, Dowager Queen Alicent, and tied her up, showing they weren't here to mess around.
Next came Queen Helaena with her kids – clueless about the horror waiting for them. Blood and Cheese grabbed one of the princes and forced the Queen to make a choice no parent should ever have to: her son's life for Lucerys'. Her pleas for mercy meant nothing to these cold-hearted killers.
Cheese, who seemed to enjoy being cruel, whispered something horrible in the young prince's ear, freaking the Queen out even more. Faced with losing all her children, she made a heartbreaking decision, tears flowing freely. She chose Maelor, the youngest, maybe hoping his innocence would protect him from the true nightmare unfolding.
Blood, with zero chill, wasted no time. With one swing of his sword, young Jaehaerys was gone. His head became a gruesome trophy, a symbol of their messed up revenge. After their sickening act, Blood and Cheese vanished back into the darkness, leaving the Queen and her remaining child in a scene of pure horror.
Blood wasn't so lucky. He got caught trying to escape the city. Torture revealed some details – Harrenhal, a hooded figure named Misery, and the satisfaction of twisted revenge. He died soon after, taking some secrets to the grave.
Cheese and Mysaria disappeared without a trace. Their act became a horrifying story whispered in the Red Keep's hidden tunnels, a constant reminder of the brutal cost of the Targaryen war. The city was left haunted by screams and the memory of a mother forced to choose between her sons. Blood and Cheese's actions shattered any hope of peace between the warring Targaryens and threw the realm further into the depths of civil war.
Blood and Cheese's brutal murder of Prince Jaehaerys wasn't just a shocking act of revenge, it was a spark that ignited a devastating civil war.
The Greens, King Aegon II's supporters, were left reeling. Queen Helaena, having witnessed her eldest son's horrific death, spiraled into a deep depression that bordered on madness. The sight of Maelor, the son she'd chosen to live, became a constant reminder of her impossible decision.
King Aegon, consumed by rage and grief over Jaehaerys' death, became even more paranoid. In a fit of blind fury, he ordered the hanging of every single rat catcher in King's Landing, a futile attempt to erase the memory of their role in the assassination. His Hand, Otto Hightower, was forced to replace them with a hundred cats – a meager substitute at best.
This act of violence marked the turning point. The simmering tension between the Blacks, Rhaenyra's supporters, and the Greens exploded into open warfare. The Dance of the Dragons, a brutal civil war that would claim the lives of both Rhaenyra and Aegon, was unleashed. Dragons rained fire on the realm, and noble houses were torn apart as they chose sides.
The legacy of Blood and Cheese wasn't just the death of a young prince. It was the near-destruction of the Targaryen dynasty and a brutal war that scarred Westeros for generations to come. Their act became a chilling symbol of the lengths to which vengeance could drive people, a grim reminder of the Dance of the Dragons.
