Imagine a sorcerer so powerful, he was feared as the undisputed King of Curses. That's Ryomen Sukuna, a legendary figure from over a thousand years ago. They say he was a human, once known as the Disgraced One, but his strength was so immense that even the greatest sorcerers of his time couldn't defeat him.
After his death, Sukuna's power was sealed within twenty indestructible fingers, scattered throughout the world. In 2018, everything changed when a young sorcerer named Yuji Itadori consumed one of those fingers. Sukuna was reborn, trapped within Yuji's body, and slowly began to exert his influence.
Sukuna is a complex character, a force of nature both terrifying and fascinating. He's cunning, manipulative, and utterly ruthless, but he also possesses a strange sense of humor and a deep-seated disdain for humanity. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Sukuna's presence will have a profound impact on the world of Jujutsu Kaisen.
Sukuna is a sight to behold. Towering over most, his muscular frame is adorned with four arms and four eyes, his large, gaping mouth positioned on his stomach. His hair, a vibrant pink-red, frames his face, where two of his eyes are set at an unusual angle, nestled within a white, plate-like structure. Tattoos, intricate and menacing, cover his body, revealing a monstrous form that has earned him the reputation of a four-armed demon.
In the past, Sukuna appeared as Yuji Itadori, his human host. However, the transformation was far from subtle. Yuji's hair became spiked, his eyes doubled, and the tattoos of Sukuna manifested on his body. When Sukuna inhabited Megumi Fushiguro, a similar transformation occurred, though Megumi's style was slightly different.
Sukuna's appearance is a testament to his otherworldly power. It's a constant reminder of the danger he poses, a visual representation of the fear he inspires. His unique form sets him apart from other sorcerers, a symbol of his dominance in the world of Jujutsu.
Sukuna embodies a deeply selfish and narcissistic nature. Cold-hearted and morally ambiguous, he revels in chaos and violence. When he was reincarnated after Yuji consumed his finger, he callously referred to innocent lives as nothing more than "maggots." His overwhelming power means he rarely considers the repercussions of his actions, even those that affect his host, Yuji Itadori. Sukuna takes pleasure in taunting Yuji, calling him a brat and mocking his despair, showing a sadistic side that highlights his emotional detachment.
Gluttonous not just for food, Sukuna craves the thrill of battle and the taste of blood. This hunger leads him to prolong fights with strong opponents, indulging in the struggle rather than finishing things quickly. He’s painfully aware of his strength, often flaunting it as he brutally dominates others, treating them with contempt. For example, he belittled a finger bearer while boasting about his superiority, showing just how arrogant he is.
Despite his brutish demeanor, Sukuna is cunning and intelligent. He’s adept at manipulation, even going so far as to tear out Yuji’s heart to enforce a binding vow. He can acknowledge an opponent’s strength—like when he praised Jogo before defeating him—showing that he’s not entirely dismissive. Yet, he has little patience for modern technology or culture, often overlooking things like smartphones, focusing only on jujutsu.
Hypocritically, Sukuna only respects strength when it benefits him. When faced with challenges, he reveals a petulant side, growing frustrated and desperate, sometimes resorting to extreme measures just to keep fighting. His arrogance blinds him to the true potential of his opponents, leading to miscalculations, especially regarding Yuji, whom he continually underestimates despite their shared history.
During his confrontations with Yuji—especially after taking over Megumi’s body—Sukuna expresses a disdain for humanity, likening people to insects. He struggles to understand why the weak cling to life so fiercely, viewing their struggles as meaningless. This perspective reveals his harsh view of existence, rooted in a form of social Darwinism. He also has a narrow understanding of love and relationships, seeing any offer of pity or mercy as a sign of weakness.
Yet, Yuji’s existence challenges Sukuna in ways he can’t ignore. The bond they share confronts Sukuna's worldview, igniting a frustration within him that he can’t quite articulate. When Yuji extends a chance for mercy, Sukuna's rage at the pity he perceives only deepens his inner conflict, highlighting the complex relationship between the two.
In the Golden Age of Jujutsu during the Heian Era, Ryomen Sukuna was a legendary figure, feared and revered as the most powerful sorcerer of his time. He defeated thousands of jujutsu sorcerers who trained specifically to challenge him. One of his most infamous achievements was the complete annihilation of both the Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad and the Five Empty Generals, the elite forces of the Fujiwara Clan. His reign of terror left Japan’s authorities so shaken that they even held festivities in his honor. Sukuna’s legacy earned him titles like "Strongest Sorcerer in History" and "King of Curses," and even today, his power is respected by modern sorcerers, including Satoru Gojo, who acknowledges that a confrontation with Sukuna would be incredibly challenging.
Sukuna’s abilities go far beyond mere reputation. He possesses immense cursed energy and remarkable control over it, showcasing an extraordinary command of jujutsu techniques. However, he isn’t just reliant on jujutsu; his physical strength is equally impressive, allowing him to defeat almost any opponent without needing to reveal his true abilities.
Even in his weakened state—when he was reincarnated in Yuji’s body and lacked most of his fingers—Sukuna remained a formidable force. He effortlessly defeated powerful cursed spirits, including one that had consumed his finger, which he easily reclaimed. In a display of his strength, he managed to overpower Megumi Fushiguro, a talented sorcerer from the Zenin Clan, to the point where Megumi admitted he was completely outmatched and was willing to unleash his trump card, Mahoraga, to try to win. Sukuna showed interest in Megumi's unique skills, choosing to spare him rather than end the fight, but he was ultimately interrupted when Yuji regained control of his body.
Sukuna attracted attention from Mahito’s group, who believed his revival would tip the scales in their favor. Even with just three fingers, Sukuna displayed overwhelming superiority, easily resisting Mahito’s abilities and inflicting serious injuries when provoked. This power intrigued Mahito, who realized that Sukuna was on an entirely different level, leading him to believe that Sukuna’s return could usher in a new era for curses.
After Yuji consumed sixteen of Sukuna’s fingers, his cursed energy resonated ominously throughout Shibuya, overshadowing even Satoru Gojo’s presence. Fully restored to about 80% of his strength, Sukuna decisively overwhelmed Jogo, the strongest cursed spirit in Mahito's group, in a lopsided battle, leaving Jogo unable to even land a single blow. Sukuna finished the fight by defeating Jogo with his own fire abilities. His final act during the Shibuya Incident was to single-handedly take down Mahoraga, a feat no user of the Ten Shadows Technique or even a member of the Gojo Clan had managed to accomplish.
Sukuna has a unique ability to reincarnate into anyone who consumes his fingers, which allows him to regain a physical, human body. When Yuji ate the first of Sukuna’s twenty fingers, Sukuna immediately took over his body. This was different from what happens with other sorcerers who are reincarnated.
According to the Angel residing in Hana Kurusu, Sukuna had gained the ability to split his soul into cursed objects after his death. He demonstrated this skill by channeling all his cursed energy into Yuji's pinky finger and then force-feeding it to Megumi, effectively taking control of his body. This clever tactic shows just how resourceful and cunning Sukuna can be.
Sukuna isn’t just a powerful jujutsu sorcerer; he’s also an incredibly skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He often relies on martial arts as his primary fighting method before bringing out his jujutsu techniques. This combination of physical prowess and cursed abilities makes him a formidable opponent in battle.
During his fight with Megumi, Sukuna easily dominated him in unarmed combat, countering Megumi’s close-range attacks with impressive speed and precision. He delivered a powerful punch that sent Megumi flying. Later, when Yuji tried to attack him within his own domain, Sukuna effortlessly countered every move Yuji made, even anticipating an attempt to trip him, which he responded to with a single, decisive kick.
With sixteen fingers, Sukuna showcased his strength by overpowering Jogo using only his hand-to-hand skills before finally finishing him off with a cursed technique. He later demonstrated his prowess by going toe-to-toe with both Yuji and Maki Zenin, both of whom are exceptional fighters in their own right. Sukuna was able to deflect most of their strikes while landing several hits of his own, proving just how formidable he is in close combat.
Sukuna has immense physical strength, even when he first appeared in an incomplete state. With just a simple swipe, he easily defeated a large cursed spirit. During his fight against Gojo, Sukuna punched the roof of the school so hard that the building cracked and ruptured. He also overpowered a Finger Bearer, a special-grade curse, without much effort.
In a gamble involving Yuji's life, Sukuna threw Megumi through several building floors and destroyed Megumi's shikigami without difficulty. He even punched Megumi with such force that it caused raindrops to scatter in the area.
With sixteen of his fingers, Sukuna punched Jogo through buildings, destroying his jaw in the process. His strikes also had a noticeable effect on Mahoraga. After taking over Megumi’s body, Sukuna pierced through Yuji's gut with ease and sent him flying across the city, momentarily stunning him.
Sukuna's speed is nothing short of incredible. Time and time again, he has shown raw, overwhelming quickness that catches most opponents completely off guard. Even with just three fingers, he was able to slam a Finger Bearer into the ground, cutting off its arm so fast that it didn't even realize it had happened.
Megumi, despite his best efforts, was no match for Sukuna's speed, being hit several times before he could even react. With sixteen fingers, Sukuna was quick enough to easily overpower Jogo and even keep pace with Mahoraga during their battle.
His speed wasn't limited to just brute force encounters. Sukuna could instantly appear between skilled sorcerers like Atsuya Kusakabe and Panda, the former being a Grade 1 sorcerer, without either of them seeing him coming.
In his fully incarnated form, Sukuna outran Yuji—a sorcerer who himself could run at an impressive speed of over 60 kilometers per hour.
Sukuna’s reflexes are exceptional, allowing him to counter his opponents before they even realize what's happened. His speed is such that his enemies can lose a limb without knowing it until it's too late.
In his fight with Mahoraga, Sukuna dodged every attack with ease, slipping through the blows and always ready to strike back. He didn’t just avoid the danger—he ended the battle before Mahoraga could even finish regenerating.
When faced with Jogo’s Maximum: Meteor, a technique capable of mass destruction, Sukuna avoided it effortlessly, leaving no doubt about the sharpness of his reflexes.
Even while inhabiting Yuji's body, Sukuna could use cursed energy to strengthen his host’s resilience. When he was punched through five buildings, he emerged completely unscathed, as if it had barely affected him.
During his fight with Satoru Gojo, Sukuna survived the devastating impact of a 200% Hollow Technique: Purple. In the final moment, he defended himself, losing only his hands in the process—an outcome that would have destroyed anyone else entirely.
Sukuna’s intelligence is sharp and calculating. He has an innate understanding of cursed techniques, curses, and reverse cursed techniques as if they were second nature. With just a glance, Sukuna can quickly grasp how a technique works—after seeing it only once or twice, he's already found ways to counter it.
In his fight with Mahoraga, Sukuna observed, understood, and adapted, using that knowledge to defeat the shikigami. His ability to see the potential in others was evident when he recognized the hidden power in Megumi’s cursed technique after only a brief encounter. Patiently, he devised a binding vow with Yuji, waiting for the perfect moment to claim Megumi’s body.
Even during his battle with Hana Kurusu, Sukuna used Megumi’s memories to deceive her into thinking Megumi was in control. In her vulnerable moment, as she embraced him, he struck, leaving her critically injured.
Sukuna possesses the unsettling ability to alter his host’s body, creating new eyes and mouths at will. Without needing full control of the host, he can see and speak freely.
In one instance, Sukuna formed a single eye and a sharp, fanged mouth on Yuji’s left cheek—just to mock and belittle him. His presence, even in small forms like this, is a constant reminder of his dominance, always ready to taunt from the shadows of his host.
Sukuna’s character in Jujutsu Kaisen embodies both overwhelming power and terrifying intelligence, making him a truly unforgettable force in the world of anime and manga. His cunning strategies, immense strength, and chilling presence make every encounter with him intense and unpredictable. As the series continues to unfold, Sukuna's role only deepens, leaving fans eager to see what his next move will be. Whether you admire his brutal efficiency or find yourself dreading his return to the forefront, one thing is certain: Sukuna is a villain whose legend will continue to grow.
